How much?

Cost depends on a number of factors––the material being tutored, the duration of the engagement, whether a student is covering multiple subjects, etc.––so it’s hard to give a general answer. However, for all subjects, there are distinct rates for session time and prep time, with prep time typically ranging between $30-50 an hour. Session rate accounts for most of the variation.

For all subjects, I typically send an invoice every other week, with work broken down by session and prep, unless not enough work has transpired to merit a new invoice. If this fee poses a significant financial obstacle, I’m open to discussing ways to mitigate that burden.

How often do you meet? Do you offer package deals?

Usually I meet with students once per week, and we proceed week to week until our work is satisfactorily concluded––probably what you think of when you think of tutoring. I prefer this to so-called “package deals,” especially when it comes to college essay advising, because proceeding by the week allows the student and I to tailor the length and frequency of our sessions to suit the student’s actual needs. Some weeks are lighter than others. Package deals, because of the smoothing required to price them, often lead to inflation.

Some students I’ve met with twice a week for shorter sessions; with some, I’ve done once every other week for longer. Such cases are the exception, not the rule, and tend to accommodate exceptional cases.
